Alex and Friends - My Little Pony: The Movie

"Alex and Friends" is a continuation of the recommendation program made last year where people recommend things to watch and review.

Today's recommendation: My Little Pony: The Movie

"That's it! I simply... cannot... even! I have nothing! The bad guys have won! I'm so sorry"

My Little Pony was not a direct influence on my childhood. I managed to see the 1980s cartoons on the TV, and while at that time I found them entertaining to watch, as anything on the TV was new and amusing, it offered little value to me, after all, their whole purpose was to commercialize toys for a female audience.

It was not until the 2010s that a new series was introduced, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which had 9 seasons and spanned the entire decade. This series improved the concept of a magical world filled with ponies and other creatures to spread good values and the power of friendship, this time, while it had a female energy and was focused on selling toys it was also mature enough for people of all ages to watch it. In 2017 My Little Pony: The Movie was announced, it was a continuation of the series after season 7 and this is the topic of today's review.

The film had the opportunity to release in a year where most animated features were, to say the least, forgettable, and even after it failed to obtain a nomination at the 90th Academy Awards it is without a doubt one of the best films of that year. In many ways it reminded me of Disney musicals of the 90s renaissance, and while I cannot point to which specific examples this movie resembles the most I am very much pleased by what I saw. The music is catchy and its sequences and montages are incredible to look and sing with. The story, an adventure in search of people to fight for a good cause is what you typically expect for a children's movie, but it is as entertaining as always.

I can't say there is a lot to comment on, especially when this is a film aimed at teens and a continuation of a TV show, except that, similar to those 90s movies this also presents an underlying political message in its subtext. Giving power to megalomaniacs and their lackeys is not something we have to accept and support, and aiding in their victory is akin to shooting yourself in the foot. This is a work whose themes tackle the 2016 Trump victory, and perhaps one of the early examples of media commenting on the issue. Sadly, we didn't learn anything from that experience.

So far it is a good movie, one that is highly enjoyable if you are watching it with friends or a fan of the series. While it is perhaps not as good as Coco (although I have my problems with it) I recommend the film and I am glad to revisit it after so many years.

Final Score - 3/5

Review: Resan (The Journey) - 1987

Story  -   Petter Watkins' global look at the impact of military use of nuclear technology and people's perception of it, as well as a meditation on the inherent bias of the media, and documentaries themselves. Cast  -  Peter Watkins Crew  -  Peter Watkins (Director) Runtime   - 873  minutes           "I think to remove the veil of ignorance from the world is the most direct way at least to achieve enlightenment." Sometimes it is incredibly difficult to sit and watch a long movie, after all, the way of life in the XXI century has been accelerating to the point that 90-minute movies are consumed in 20 different parts on a tiny screen while commuting to work. This is a world that 15 years ago I would have never imagined. I believe on this occasion, watching a movie divided into 19 different sections has helped me to appreciate and embrace what it is trying to say on a different level. It is hard for someone in 2024 to...

300 - Review

"A new age has begun, an age of freedom. And all will know that 300 Spartans gave their last breath to defend it."           It is hard to describe a movie from the past two decades that has had as much impact on young men as 300 . Even when we compare it to films like Fight Club , Drive , or John Wick , 300 seems to speak in a way that almost any man is captured by its aesthetics and mythology. To dismiss a movie, especially one with such magnitude and power as "popcorn entertainment," is at best, ignorant, and at worst, a facilitator of its message and, in the case of this film, its cryptofascist message. Let us be clear for a second: movies, like any other art form, are not created in a vacuum by soulless and thoughtless people. The zeitgeist, culture, time period, and events all affect the media we consume, produce, create, and enjoy. German cinema from the 1930s and 40s served as a way to understand the Führer pro...

Pale Rider - Review

"There's plain few problems that can't be solved with a little sweat and hard work."           Western is a genre as old as cinema itself, and it has in it everything that America represents or did at one point. However, as much as it is an American genre, it does lack one of the key aspects of its culture: religion. I am not talking about the imagery of Christ or the occasional encounters with preachers and churches, but rather the hope and sense of community that people found in their faith. I have read many reviews about this film and comparisons with Shane (1953) are all too common, especially on Letterboxd, and while I have yet to see the movie, I can see its influence, especially in the way it tries to portray heroism and doing the right thing for others. Pale Rider is a product of a dying genre, one that started to become smaller and more emotional. Long are the days of Native American fights with the Coloni...
